Magnesium anode in backfill

A prepackaged magnesium anode is a galvanically operating sacrificial anode system that is factory-encapsulated in a highly hygroscopic backfill and enclosed in a permeable textile bag. This configuration is designed for direct underground installation in cathodic protection systems for pipelines, tanks, and other metallic infrastructure.

The surrounding backfill mixture — typically composed of gypsum, bentonite, and sodium sulphate — improves electrolytic conductivity and reduces the anode-to-soil resistance. This results in more efficient current output and a more uniform anode consumption pattern, thereby optimising both system performance and service life.

Because all preparatory assembly is carried out under controlled factory conditions, installation errors on site are minimised. The use of this prepackaged unit also provides a significant time saving during installation and helps ensure reliable functional performance of the anode system.
